NVIDIA Demonstrates Power of DirectX11

Product imageNVIDIA have shown off their own DirectX 11 demos to the public at GDC2010.

Showing off the power of their new cards we have a hair demo, an obligatory water demo and a demo showing off blades of grass.

One of the main themes for all these demos was tessellation with four units in the GF100 based GTX 480 and 470, compared to AMD’s one in the 5800 series, this is where the new NVIDIA cards are likely to really shine.

NVIDIA claims at maximum tesellation settings the GPU creates 11 million vertices from a data point of just 20,000 and processes almost 1.6 billion triangles per second.

The grass demo renders 48 million triangles per second – next time you go to a football/rugby/park* (*delete as appropriate) field just imagine the amount of processing power it takes to simulate those individual blades of grass.

Tessellation will be a much used buzzword over the next few weeks, whether or not it is the killer feature for NVIDIA’s GTX 480 and 470 remains to be seen.
