OCZ Agility 3 240GB SSD Review

Conclusion

When OCZ set out to create the Agility 3 they clearly felt that there was a gap in the market at a price level which the Vertex 3 couldn’t currently meet. Thankfully in creating the product to fill that space OCZ haven’t gone down the route of cutting corners in terms of quality as the Agility 3 uses the same packaging and casing as the more expensive model. The only thing we lack on this drive is the drive bay convertor which is becoming less of a requirement with more cases supporting 2.5" drives natively.

Inside the controller used by OCZ is the same as we find in the Vertex 3 models and along with a PCB layout change we get a change in memory which allows them to hit that lower price point. This memory is still quality branded MLC NAND Flash which is good to see and the capacity hits the same level as the Vertex 3.

It is only when we sit and look at benchmarks that the two drives split apart a little but this drop in performance doesn’t impact the Agility 3’s ability to outperform the competition in the majority of our tests. Across the board the Sandforce based drive performed exceptionally well and it was only when dealing with large files on a regular basis (those over 1GB in size) that the user would notice the Intel drive noticeably performing better. That means an overall faster experience on the OCZ drive within Windows, as theoretically demonstrated by the CrystalDiskMark test.

In terms of value OCZ offer a good 3-year warranty on the Agility 3, price it at a level which makes it ultra-competitive with the Intel 510 series and bundled with the drive we get a handy tool which helps us maintain the SSD quickly and easily. When we then consider that OCZ offer one of the best support forums in the business then the drive has a lot going for it.

Summary
Yet another high performance SSD from OCZ. It outperforms the competition in day to day use and is priced at a very competitive level.
