OCZ Core Series 64GB SSD

OCZ Core Series 64GB SSD

Solid state disks are becoming popular nowadays, sizes are increasing and the latest SLC versions are considerably faster than any mechanical drive. Solid State Drives (SSD’s) do not suffer from the inherent rotational platter limitations of a standard hard drive either. The only current problem with SSD’s is their high price per gigabyte. Until a few months ago an SSD drive with decent capacity would have cost a few thousand US dollars, but as prices have dropped these products have became more and more affordable.

OCZ have made the boldest move lately with the release of their new Core Series SSD drives. The OCZ Core Series not only uses the latest MLC technology, but their retail prices are half any other similar SSD drive at the time of their launch.

The Core Series drives are currently available in capacities ranging from 32GB to 128GB. We will take a look at the 64GB version of the product in this review.

Manufacturer features and specifications

*Consumers may see a discrepancy between reported capacity and actual capacity; the storage industry standard is to display capacity in decimal. However, the operating system usually calculates capacity in binary format, causing traditional HDD and SSD to show a lower capacity in Windows. In the case of SSDs, some of the capacity is reserved for formatting and redundancy for wear leveling. These reserved areas on an SSD may occupy up to 5% of the drive’s storage capacity.

Packaging and bundle

The OCZ Core Series SSD drive is supplied in a small and simple cardboard box. The artwork on the package is minimal with only a few features and specifications being mentioned. The drive is very well protected, sandwiched between cardboard pieces. Inside the package you will also find a very basic manual and an antistatic envelope for the drive.
