Install Times (Windows/CS5/Office 2010)

Installing Windows, chances are that all of us have to do it at one point or another and while it is not essential to have fantastic performance in this area, it is a good test for writing a large amount of data to the drive in a short space of time. This is especially useful due to the fact the variation in file sizes being written is huge. The time taken is recorded from the moment we begin the install, after partitioning and formatting to when the prompt appears where we choose our username.

Installing Windows 7 on the RevoDrive is an easy affair. Boot from CD or USB (we use the latter) and when at the drive selection screen install the Silicon Image driver from optical or flash media. Then it is just a case of following the standard install process and just under 400 seconds later the OS is ready to use… 21 seconds ahead of the C300.

The Adobe CS5 Master Collection is one of the largest program suites that any user is likely to install and as a result can be quite a time consuming process. For this test we have the installation files on the drives themselves so as not to bottleneck the performance and once again we see great results from the OCZ product. It manages to install CS5 over a minute faster than the Crucial model.

In our final installation test we take Office 2010 Professional Plus and install the entire suite of programs from an installer based on the RevoDrive and C300. As with the other tests the OCZ drive is faster than the Crucial but not by as much this time.
