OCZ RevoDrive X2 240GB PCIe SSD Review

OCZ RevoDrive X2 240GB PCIe SSD Review

Looking first at the build quality of the RevoDrive X2 we have a product which is based on the excellent components used for the original model. This means a high quality, reliable RAID controller, high specification PCIe bridge, the excellent Sandforce 1200 series controllers and industry leading Intel flash chips. Added to this is a second PCB, very well secured and matching the quality of the main board.

Design wise the product continues to impress as the RevoDrive features some useful status LEDs and arrives with RAID 0 pre-configured. Should the user have any issue OCZ have left the controller BIOS in place and by pressing CTRL+S during boot we can rebuild the array from scratch.

For performance the OCZ RevoDrive X2, like the previous model, is one of the most impressive products we have ever tested. The original won 17 of the 14 tests we ran on it and the X2 exceeds this, winning all 20 of the tests in our expanded suite. Not only that, in the majority it was significantly faster than the original RevoDrive and left the fastest SATA based SSD far, far behind. Taking the Office 2010 install as an example, it finished the task in 2minutes 2 seconds, over 1 minute 40 seconds ahead of the already very fast C300. File copy operations were also incredibly fast as the X2 completed our 20GB copy in half the time of the C300.

These results are all very good but what most impresses about the RevoDrive is its feel when in use. Everything which involves a drive operation happens instantly, it really is the product that benefits users with the most recent CPUs and some fast DDR3.

So to value. When we looked at the original RevoDrive we praised the unit for offering a good price to performance ratio and excellent 3-year warranty which was enhanced by the great support forum at OCZ. The X2 shares that same warranty and support and although it is more expensive due to the use of two additional controllers and the components that go along with this the performance per £ or $ spent is still fantastic. Just look at the ATTO results as an example where we hit over 800MB/s read speeds, 700MB/s write. That said, it is currently possible to buy 4x Vertex 2 SSDs for cheaper than the RevoDrive X2, which may appeal to some users however we would therefore fill 4 of our available SATA ports, increase the cabling in our system and have a more complex (manual) setup procedure.

Fast, stunning, fantastic, insane, record setting, outstanding, industry leading, crazy and amazing are just some of the terms we can associate with the OCZ RevoDrive X2. Put simply, the best consumer storage device ever created.
