OCZ Vertex 3 Max IOPS 240GB SSD Review

OCZ Vertex 3 Max IOPS 240GB SSD Review

OCZ Vertex 3 Max IOPS 240GB SSD (Solid State Drive) Review vs Crucial M4 (C400) and Intel 510 Series

Conclusion

When we took a look at the pre-production version of the Vertex 3 back in February we found it to be an impressive SSD, the best SATA based model we had tested at that time. The revised Max IOPS version leaves us with the same conclusion.

OCZ create good impression with some attractive, compact packaging that does a good job of protecting the SSD. Inside we find a useful bracket to assist us in placing the drive in a 3.5" bay and the overall bundle is rounded off by the OCZ Toolkit, a free application which ensures we can maintain performance over time as well as monitor the SSD and update its firmware.

In terms of design we have a unit which is based on the same Sandforce controller which impressed us previously and OCZ have answered the request of those who said they would prefer 32nm NAND flash over the 25nm alternative in the standard edition.

As a result performance has been tweaked so that the drive maintains the same 500MB/s+ speeds we originally saw but with increased IOPS which will benefit our operating system responsiveness.

Like many other high end SSD’s the Max IOPS will feel expensive to some consumers, that said it is comparable to the competition in price and we feel the 120GB model is very attractively priced at £250. For this price level we are getting a high level of build quality mixed with class leading performance and unmatched customer support when we buy an OCZ SSD. That mixed with the 3-year warranty makes for a very well rounded product.

Summary
The OCZ Vertex 3 Max IOPS SSD is the perfect match for any mainstream or enthusiast system.
