OCZ have changed their SSD casing for this revision of the drive and now use a plastic top section with a sticker which gives the model name. Turning the unit over we find a brushed metal base which extends onto the sides of the drive. In the centre is a sticker, next to the SATA 6GB/s connector, which on this model tells us that it is a Max IOPS edition, also listing drive capacity and a note that the warranty is void if opened.

Speaking of opening the drive, here is a look at the inside. OCZ use their own, green PCB for the Vertex 3 Max IOPS and on the top side we can see the SandForce SF-2281 controller. Elsewhere things have changed since the original Vertex 3 though. On the original model we had eight 25nm Micron MLC NAND flash chips on the top surface, eight underneath which gave the drive a formatted capacity of 223GB in Windows 7. On this edition of the drive we have 32nm Toshiba TH58TAG7D2FBAS9 NAND with 16GB used for overprovisioning, giving the user a formatted capacity of 223GB in Windows 7.

OCZ rate their SATA 3 based 240GB Vertex 3 Max IOPS at 550MB/s read with write at 500MB/s and this close ratio of read to write is once again down to the SandForce controller and its data management algorithms. This performance is then maintained by TRIM in operating systems such as Windows 7. For IOPS performance OCZ rate the Vertex 3 at 60,000 on compressible data 4KB Random Write, the Max IOPS increases that to 65,000 (Read 55,000). Uncompressible data is rated at 58,500 read, 48,500 write.

Finally, in terms of extra features we have support for enhanced BCH ECC, SMART and SATA-7 Security Erase as well as a reliability specification of 2 million hours and a warranty of 3-Years.
