OCZ Vertex 460 240GB SSD Review

In the world of SSDs OCZ have a place right at the high end of the market. If you demand the best performance, they look to provide it with the PCIe based RevoDrive series. Enthusiasts are catered for by the Vector series, with the 150 model being the drive of the moment in that family. Then at the lower end of the pricing scale they have the Vertex drives which look to maximise the performance to cash ratio.

Today OCZ are refreshing their Vertex series drives, bringing in the Vertex 460. This drive still uses OCZ’s own controller but mixes in new 19nm MLC to the range and boosts the I/O spec as well as adding performance tweaks. Today we compare it to a range of other solutions all vying for SSD upgraders and newbies.

Packaging and Bundle

The box design here is a variation on a theme we have seen from OCZ, just as expected based on previous models. That means a nice big image of the drive is shown along with key specifications and inside the drive is suspended in foam and wrapped in an antistatic material. As is always the case with this manufacturer, bundled with the SSD we get a case sticker, screws, bracket to convert the drive for use in a 3.5" bay and a short installation manual. These drives also get a copy of Acronis Trueimage HD to assist in moving an existing operating system from our current drive to the Vertex.

OCZ also make their Toolbox software available for free and it allows us to monitor and maintain the SSD. We can for example completely erase the drive or update the firmware in this tool.
