PCI-E 5.0 SSDs will blow your mind

We are starting to see PCI-E 4.0 SSDs on a regular basis. Thanks to the use of this protocol, these PCI-E 4.0 SSDs can reach read and write speeds of up to 8.0 Gb/s. The arrival of PCI-E 5.0, which is expected to double the available bandwidth, heralds a new explosion in performance. Taking this data into consideration, we end up with a total bandwidth provided by a PCI-E x16 slot of approximately 64 GB/s! A PCI-E x4 slot (which corresponds to the standard of the current SSD cards) can transfer up to about 16 GB/sec. plextor pci-e ssd

PCI-E 5.0: an explosion of speeds…but not for now

NAND flash controller manufacturer Silicon Motion, a newcomer to the controller field, announced that the company will launch a PCI-E 5.0 controller next year. Initially, this gain is expected to benefit server platforms, especially in combination with Intel Sapphire Rapids Xeon processors that support PCI-E 5.0, as the increased transfer rates will be particularly beneficial for bandwidth-hungry applications such as servers, datacenters, and more. However, we will have to wait until the second half of the year 2022 for this to happen. For the general public, we will have to wait for the arrival of platforms with PCI-E 5.0 anyway. Cla should be the case at Intel with Alder Lake-S then at AMD with the Ryzen 6000…
