Rosewill Capstone G Series 1000w PSU Review

Rosewill Capstone G Series 1000w PSU Review

It’s been a while since we last tested a PSU so today we dust down the test bench…and some braincells to take a look at the recently released G Series 1000w model from Rosewill. A model with different design to the Capstone 1000w standard edition. Welcome to our Rosewill Capstone 1000w PSU Review.

Rosewill Capstone G Series 1000w PSU Review – Packaging and Bundle

Rosewill packafe their Capstone PSU in a fairly large box which gives us a little info about the product, including its 5-year warranty and gaming focus. Inside the PSU is wrapped in a plastic bag and suspended in foam for extra protection with the bundled cables, ties and screws off to the side in a storage bag. Also present is a short product leaflet.

As far as cabling goes, only the main 20/24pin cable is hard wired. The rest of the cables are flat, rubber coated and modular. They consist of two 4/8pin, a single wire of molex which ends in a floppy drive and there are 8 PCIe connectors, 12 SATA power.

Rosewill go for a matt black finish for the casing on this PSU and provide minimal branding, just that product info sticker on the top of the device. Flipping it over we find a grill for the 13.5cm cooling fan.

The exhaust end of the PSU is the location for out power input and a rocker switch with the rest of the surface being perforated to allow maximum airflow. On the opposite end there is a small grill, the 24pin cable wiring (braided) and then our modular connectors with two being colour coded for the 4/8pin bundled cables.

As far as features go, we get all Japanese capacitors, 80plus gold efficiency, single 12v rail with a rating of 83A, Active PFC (0.99) and various protection circuits:

Over Current / Voltage / Power / Temperature Protection, Under Voltage Protection, and Short Circuit Protection.

Dimensions are 3.39″ x 5.91″ x 7.09″.

Rosewill Capstone G Series 1000w PSU Review – Conclusion

Starting with the build quality of the Capstone G Series 1000w we have a decent looking PSU. The minimal branding will appeal to those who dislike some of the more garish PSUs on the market, though the use of two yellow modular connectors is a bit odd. Black would have been fine as the other markings on the PSU are nice and clear as to what goes where. The matt finish on the casing is decent and inside there are quality Japanese capacitors with decent soldering throughout. The modular cables are longer than most standard PSUs, though the 12v could do with being a touch longer to make wiring that extra bit easier on larger builds. We do like the focus on SATA/PCIe over molex/floppy and there are easily enough PCIe connectors for high end Crossfire/SLI builds.

In terms of performance, the G Series 1000w does well. Rosewill have not gone with a model featuring hybrid fan/silent mode, a feature offered by some competing models however the fan used here is thermally controlled so runs at a low RPM during normal desktop use. As we start to push the PSU it delivers fairly stable voltages, always staying within the range we would expect for a high wattage unit. Efficiency, ripple and noise levels are good with exhaust temperatures perfectly acceptable for a unit of this spec.

Summary: Overall with the G Series 1000w PSU, with its 5-year warranty and competitive RRP, offers a well balanced product. It may not have some of the more advanced features of higher priced models but it runs quiet, stable and performs well.
