Seagate Backup Plus Slim Review

Seagate Backup Plus Slim Review

USB drives offering varied levels of portable storage have been around for many years however times have very much changed and now cloud storage is a big thing. To some that would mean the end of USB storage however if you are a manufacturer like Seagate you embrace the change and create a product which works well with the cloud. Today we cover that in our  Seagate Backup Plus Slim Review.

The Backup Plus Slim arrives in a fairly compact box which gives us a note of the capacity, bundled OneDrive storage plan and a some key info. Inside the drive is protected by a plastic casing and bundled with it is an 18 inch USB 3.0 cable and product documentation. Software for the drive is available to download, more on that later.

Seagate Backup Plus Slim Review – The Drive

The Backup Plus Slim is shown above and the first aspect of note is the presence of a brushed metal top surface. Located on that is a small seagate logo and in one corner, a thin LED which lets us know that the drive is powered on or active. Turning the drive over we find a plastic base with S curve design and model information sticker. The sides are blank and at one end we find the USB 3.0 connector.

As far as dimensions go, the Backup Plus Slim is 113.5mm x 76mm x 9.6mm, weighing in at 159g. Silver, Blue, Black and Red models are available as are 500GB, 1TB and 2TB capacities.

Seagate Backup Plus Slim Review – Software

Available for free from the Seagate website are two tools for the Backup Plus Slim. The main tool that we use for the drive is Seagate Dashboard and that is shown above. It allows us to create backups for our PC, mobile device and social media…for example uploading/downloading images from Facebook or Flickr. The drive also has integration with Dropbox, Google Drive, NeroCloud and OneDrive. For OneDrive we get 2 years of 200GB storage with this product.

The second software solution from Seagate is SeaTools which allows us to monitor and maintain our drive. It also has links to rescue software for those who end up in a situation where a product develops an issue. One great feature of that solution is that Seagate allow us to run the rescue tool and once we have seen the results, that is when we choose to buy a license or not.

Also available is a mobile app from Seagate which allows us to manage our backups from a tablet or phone and the Backup Plus Slim is compatible with the third party Lyve app.

Seagate Backup Plus Slim Review – Conclusion

Beginning with the build quality and design of the Backup Plus Slim we have a drive which immediately impresses. That brushed metal top is lovely, especially in silver with the white LED glowing through nicely in the corner. The plastic base is nice and solid but that said, we would have loved a rubberized finish on it. This is of course the slim model and at less than a centimeter thick we have a drive which will fit in most pockets with ease. Just the single cable is required, no extra power cable and we had no issues with compatibility between systems. In fact this drive is designed to move between PC and MAC without the need for a re-format.

As far as value goes, the drive is competitively priced, has a 2-year warranty and the OneDrive plan offers some extra value on top of that.

The software tools offered by Seagate are intuative. Just a few clicks has us ready to backup on an ad-hoc or planned basis and compatibility with the main online platforms is present which is great. For those who want to use the drive as USB storage capacities up to 2TB mean that most uses will  be catered for and the performance is good, peaking at over 130MB/s for read, 140MB/s for write.

Summary: Portable storage which is sturdy, offers good performance and goes above and beyond the competition in terms of mobile and cloud support.
