OCZ Vertex Turbo – 120GB

OCZ use a similar style of packaging to that which we have seen on other models in their product range. It is small and packed with plenty of product information and inside we find the SSD protected by foam along with a short user guide.

OCZ use their standard metal drive case for the Vertex turbo and on the top is a sticker which gives us the drive name and confirms that this is a 2.5” model. By flipping the drive over we can see the standard SATA connectors and a further information sticker — from this we can see the capacity of the drive. Also worth noting is that this is the first drive in the review which has a warranty seal to stop consumers opening the drive without voiding the 3-year warranty.

Inside the case we find that this SSD uses the Indilinx Barefoot controller and 64Mb of cache which are both present on the standard Vertex. Where the specifications differ is that the host clock speed is increased, as is the cache which runs at 180MHz compared to 166MHz used on other SSDs. These increases give the drive a read speed of 270MB/s, write speed of 200MB/s and sustained write of 120MB/s which are all 20MB/s faster than other Indilinx based drives.

The firmware on the Vertex Turbo can be updated by the end user. There are no updates available at the moment however as it uses the Indilinx controller the process will be the same as other Vertex models which are easily upgraded. Also worth taking into account is that this drive also supports the OCZ Performance Restore Tool which assists in maintaining the drives performance while we wait for full TRIM support.
