SSD Roundup March 2009

SSD Roundup March 2009

Conclusion

Intel X25-M
There is little to fault about the Intel X25-M, it is the most compact of the drives being tested today and is also very light. The performance achieved by this drive is also very good, in everyday tasks such as booting into Windows it is significantly faster than the others being tested today and in intensive use, for example media encoding, it is able to outperform the other models. If there is one minor issue with the X25-M it is the read speed of 70MB/s which is lower than the other drives being tested, a factor which does impact our video capture test… though it could be argued that the X25-E with its 170MB/s write speed is more suited to that task.

Patriot Warp .v2
The aspect of the Warp .v2 which most impresses is the price that Patriot have chosen for the unit, $89 for an SSD is good value even for a 32Gb model and so that makes this a very attractive purchase. In our tests it performed very well when compared to the Super Talent model and when comparing read speeds to the Intel drive the Patriot is faster in paper specifications and real world use. Where the drive is a small disappointment is its performance as a Windows drive – a scenario where the controller is a limitation, though it is by no means unusable and there are tweaks which can be applied to improve the user experience in this area. With those in place the Warp v.2 wins our Editors Choice award.

Super Talent MasterDrive OX
When looking at the specifications of the MasterDrive OX we see that it should perform somewhere below the Intel and Patriot models, depending on the task being performed. In real world use we see that it is often very close in performance to the Warp drive and overall we feel that Super Talent have created a very well balanced product. Whether being used as a primary Windows drive, or as a more specialised model, we are never disappointed by the performance and it is therefore a worthy winner of our Editors Choice award.
