Black Magic Disk Speed

Black Magic Design make a number of industry leading video capture cards, including those which can capture HD material at very high data rates. As a result having a disk with a fast write speed is essential. To aid users in configuring their system for optimal captures Black Magic include a utility with their hardware which records the real world disk speed and gives the framerate available for that speed.

Shown above are the results from our video capture/playback test which detail some very interesting results. Firstly we see that this test exposes a small weakness in the design of the X25-M, its low write speed. The stated speed for this drive is 70MB/s compared to 100Mb/s for the Patriot and Super Talent and all three fall a little below their stated specification, the Patriot faring best of all.

In terms of read speed we see particularly strong performance from the Intel drive with Patriot just edging the Super Talent. This does not tell the whole story though as the Warp should be hitting about 175MB/s where as the Super Talent is only 3.8MB/s off its maximum specification.
