SteelSeries 6Gv2 Mechanical Gaming Keyboard Review

For quite some time the gaming keyboard market has concentrated on products which add macro buttons, re-assignments, profiles, USB and audio pass-through and weighted key actions to enhance the gaming experience. In addition to this we see branded products such as the Razer StarCraft 2 gear and SteelSeries Medal of Honor products however few manufacturers have looked to release high quality mechanical keyboards for the gaming masses.

There have been a few though and these have clearly made an impact with gamers as we are regularly seeing manufacturers launch their own mechanical gaming models. One manufacturer which has historically offered mechanical keyboards for gamers is SteelSeries and they are now back with a new model, the 6Gv2 which we have connected to our system today.

Packaging and Bundle

SteelSeries package the 6Gv2 in a box not much bigger than the keyboard itself. We get a clear image of the product on the front with features listed elsewhere and inside the board is protected by layers of cardboard. Bundled with the keyboard is a USB to PS/2 convertor, sticker and product documentation.

Stuart: Fine review! Yes, this is one solidly made keyboard. Ironically, though, it’s not necessary to type very hard on it. Because it uses the stiffer Cherry MX Black switches, it’s easier to press them just beyond their actuation points (about halfway down) rather than “bottoming out” (unnecessarily pressing them to their bases) as we tend to do with lighter switches. If you approach them with this attitude, you can type more lightly, quickly and efficiently than on any of the more common switches.

Unfortunately, it’s not easy to explain this concept, so most keyboard makers simply use light switches and leave people to pound away on them. THOSE are the boards that must be built like tanks. :?)
