Synology Disk Station DS410j – Initial Setup

Although there are many NAS solutions on the market there are lots of different ways of running them, some that are simply Hard drives that sit on a network tend to require very little in the way of setup, simply give the device an IP address and configure the hard disks and we are ready to go. However as more and more features are added to the boxes they require more configuration and administration, some utilise client side configuration utilities and some use Web based config, the Disk Station actually uses both. To install and setup the unit is plugged via Ethernet into a switch or hub and then from a client PC we run the installation software provided on the CD, this starts the configuration of the Disk Station. We did run into a few issues of the software not detecting the unit at first but shutting everything down and starting again seem to solve the problem.

Note: the Disk Station needs DHCP running on your network to begin installation.
