Synology Disk Station DS410j – User Experience One

After the Station was detected via the Synology assistant we followed the simple on screen instructions to initially setup the device enough to allow connectivity via the web browser. The Synology assistant also allows monitoring of the Disk Station so that you can keep an eye on memory usage, CPU usage, network throughput and space available. Another feature of the assistant allows mapping of network drives straight to the client with a few clicks. The web interface is laid out in a nice windows style for configuration, all features are listed down one side and split into different categories making it easy to locate the setting we are looking for, it even allows for right clicking on certain items which is unusual within a web based application but makes certain tasks that much faster.

Even though we could use this as a simple network storage device there is so much flexibility that users just wouldn’t; whatever we are using it for there is a feature to make it easier. Simply clicking on each feature or category on the left brings up the options on the right to enable that feature and change settings for it. By default everything more or less is disabled so we are only running the things we need to.

The platform is running on Linux and is both easy to use and responsive however we found that each menu item selected takes quite a few seconds to populate the page even across a directly connected LAN cable. Starting with configuring the hard disks first we were given a straight forward window asking how the drives are to be configured, being that we had this unit fully populated with 4x 500GB drives we went for a RAID 5 solution giving us the additional speed over a single drives but with fault tolerance should anything fail, we do effectively loose a drive using RAID 5 so that brought our storage just shy of 1.4TB which is still respectable and in line with other solutions.
