Synology DiskStation DS213j Review

Synology DiskStation DS213j Review

Conclusion and Rating

Looking first to the design and build quality of the DS213j we have a unit which uses a stylish white chassis which feels robust when screwed together. The internal components are installed on a sturdy metal frame and each of our drives is easy to add, just slot them in and secure in place. The front panel of the device offers a nice easy to understand set of LEDs and the power button is the only other feature of note on an otherwise minimalist design.

If we had to change anything about the basics of the unit we might spread out the ports on the back a little to make the installation of larger portable USB drives as issue free as possible. Other than maybe adding a reset button on the front there is nothing else users will find lacking though for a unit in this price range. (Synology’s more expensive products of course include things such as card readers and USB 3.0 support for those who need them.)

As we expect from Synology the DS213j offered complete stability during our testing, we simply installed the latest OS using the browser based wizard and within 20mins or so of unboxing the unit was up and running. From there we can configure so many different features using DSM that it is hard to find any other range of NAS that can compete with DiskStation and that is no different with the launch of DS213j. In terms of performance the unit hit its advertised speed of 100MB/s read and 70MB/s write which puts it towards the middle of the pack in performance however offers more than enough bandwidth (and CPU performance) to stream full HD content over our network.

A well balanced, affordable entry in the Synology range which brings class leading features and specifications to a new price point.

I bought one of these just before Christmas 2013.
I use it for file storage, and transferred my mail server to it soon after.

Whilst it does absolutely everything it says on the tin, the only problem is Synology itself.
I had religiously upgraded the firmware every time a new version came out, and everything was fine until 3 months ago, when , after a firmware upgrade it started rebooting itself. At first the reboot was every couple of hours so it wasn’t a huge deal. Then after another firmware upgrade it became worse until it was continuously rebooting.

I raised a support request with synology very early on, and checked their forums. A lot of people had experienced this, but synology took the line that it must be a hardware problem. I went through the various hoops they set me, but the one thing they would not consider was that the firmware was causing the problem.

I upgraded it again last night and instantly the problem improved although it didn’t go away.

I would not buy another one of these, and I am considering asking for my money back if they don’t stop being in denial.
