Thortech Thunderbolt Plus 1000W – Internal

Thortech use a Globe Fan branded fan for this PSU and it is a 13.5×13.5×2.5cm model (RL4Z B1352512H-3M) with 11 blades and is a DC12V, 0.33A product.

Looking inside the PSU we find that this is a reasonably compact 1000w model and the components are packed quite tightly inside. The OEM for Thortech appears to be Sirfa and it is good to see components given stability with adhesive where required.

As is normal for a high end PSU several features within the product combine to protect the PC components in the event of a fault developing. First up is Over/Under Voltage Protection which ensures that the 12, 5 and 3.3v outputs do not exceed a set level. Over-Current Protection works on the same outputs to ensure DC voltage remains within safe limits. Short-Circuit Protection which powers off the PSU should any of the 3.3v, 5v or 12v rails short any other rail or ground and of course the unit rounds the protection features off with Over Power Protection along with Over Temperature Protection.

In terms of key features we have a unit which has one 12v rated for 83.33A and mixed with this high specification is an 80 Plus Gold certification which means it has passed certification of 88% efficiency at 20% and 100% with 50% load rated at over 92% (230V).

In terms of components used we find a selection of Japanese capacitors inside, smaller units branded Nippon Chemi-Con and the two primary capacitors Rubicon models with a 400v 390µF rating. All are 105°C parts, rather than the cheaper 85°C alternative. It is also good to see the braided wiring extending well into the PSU.

Finally it is worth noting that this PSU has a 5-Year warranty and has safety approvals from CUL, TÜV, CB, CE, FCC, CCC, C’TICK, GOST-R and PSE as well as meeting Intel, ATX, EPS and AMD/NVIDIA requirements.
