TP-LINK Archer C9 Review

Over the past couple of years we have reviewed a number of TP-LINK products and found them all to be solid, reliable hardware. Today we take a look at one of their latest high end AC1900 routers in our TP-LINK Archer C9 Review.

TP-LINK Archer C9 Review – Packaging and Bundle

TP-LINK go with very familiar styling on their packaging which gives us a nice clear view of the router along with listing many of the key features and specifications. Inside the box the router is protected by two layers of plastic and suspended in a cardboard tray. Bundled with the router we get product documentation, mains adapter, network cable and three antenna.

The front surface of the Archer C9 is a glossy white with the TP-LINK logo in the centre. Various Status LEDs run along the top and we have two rubber feet on the base. The router stands vertically on our desk, using a built in silver stand and on the top we have the ports for our antenna.

Down the right side of the router are a USB 3.0 port and Wi-Fi on/off button then round the back we find the main connectivity. That starts on the left with USB 2.0 and runs through the port from our cable/DSL modem, four GB LAN ports and the power input. There is also a button for reset/WPS and a switch for on/off.

In terms of specifications and key features the Archer C9 offers the following:

  • Supports 802.11ac standard-the next generation of Wi-Fi

Setup of our router is very simple. The documentation with the router tells us to head to an IP address or site which opens up our control panel. We enter the default security details and then can go through a quick wizard to connect to the internet. Once completed we are presented with a map of our network and a list of options on the left.

Clicking the options on the left allows us to configure aspects such as wireless passwords, guest networks and file/print sharing. We can also switch to an advanced view on the tabs at the top where we get control of every aspect of the router, including the ability to set up parental controls, manage bandwidth and update our firmware.

TP-LINK Archer C9 Review – Conclusion

Starting with the build quality and design of the Archer C9 we have an impressive start from TP-LINK. The glossy finish looks great and the blue status LEDs are discrete but easy to follow. Having a side mounted USB 3.0 port makes connection of storage nice and easy and there is plenty of movement on the antenna allowing them to be positioned to our needs. All of the standard connectivity is included on the back but we do have one minor issue. The silver surround/stand really should be removable and holes available which allow us to wall mount. Most users wont need that, but some prefer it.

Looking next to the admin panel we found it to function well. It has a modern feel and all of the basic functions are available via intuitive options. The interface is also responsive and through the advanced settings we have plenty of control over the key aspects of the product.

As far as performance goes, we found the TP-LINK Archer C9 to be excellent. It provided a strong signal across multiple floors and also outside into the garden. It easily coped with a fast home broadband connection of 160/12 and was capable of providing smooth steaming of multiple HD streams at the same time, as well as low pings for gamers (single digit numbers). Wired performance was solid, only limited by the drives in our network storage and we had no issues with stability in our time testing.

Summary: Nice styling, intuitive/responsive and attractive admin panel. Impressive performance both wired and Wireless.
