Turtle Beach Ear Force Recon 50P Review

Turtle Beach Ear Force Recon 50P Review

We’ve had a lot of good experience with Turtle Beach products in the past. Regardless of the platform their products have offered a good level of build quality and impressive performance. Of course as with most things this quality has a price.  Today’s product is an interesting one because it looks to offer decent features and multi platform compatibility at a surprisingly low price. This is our Turtle Beach Ear Force Recon 50P Review.

Turtle Beach Ear Force Recon 50P Review – Packaging and Bundle

The Recon 50P arrives in a pretty standard Turtle Beach box. A decent view of the headset, listing of key features and some specification information. Inside the box we get some product information and the detachable mic with removable foam shield.

Turtle Beach Ear Force Recon 50P Review – The Headset

The Recon 50P uses plastic throughout the headset, other than the padded areas on the headband and ear cups. The headband can be extended by around an inch on each side and the two ear-cups fold flat if needed. Our microphone connects to the left cup via the port shown above.

There is some Turtle Beach branding on the sides of the cups, blue fabric on the inside and beneath that 40mm Neodymium drivers. Extending from each earcup is a ruber coated cable which joins towards the base of our neck and then continues on into a control pod which features microphone mute and volume dial. The cable ends in a 3.5mm connector which offers compatibility for PC, Mac, XBox One, PS4 and smartphone/tablet.

Turtle Beach Ear Force Recon 50p Review – Conclusion

Starting with the build quality and design of the 50P we have a headset which looks decent, black and blue always works well and there isnt too much on the looks side of things which make this look like a low cost headset. We were not huge fans of the two wire approach for the ear cups, running the cable to the left and over to the right makes cable management a bit easier and as a minor note, a clip on the control pod would have been handy too. The amount of foam on offer is decent and thanks to the plastic construction the headset is very light.

In use the headset has a decent amount of pressure which ensures it is clamped to our head, keeping in noise though the closed design. That also means that with a decent amount of volume the outside world is hard to hear too, often desirable. The headset worked without issue on each of the devices we tested with and of course is just plug  and play. The removable mic gives fairly standard quality which is more than adequate for the average gamer.

In terms of listening experience, given the price of the 50P, we were pleasantly surprised. There was no significant distortion at high volume and for podcasts and the like voices were nice and crisp. Music listening was decent. There wasn’t the bass experience we would get from premium headsets, and the mid tones were a little flat with prominent high end which might not appeal to all users. That said, it was still a decent experience. For movies and gaming the 50P performed well. Plenty of crisp gunshots, clear vocals and good sound field.

Summary: Very good platform compatibility, light and comfortable. A surprisingly good headset for the price point.
