UK wants to sanction scalpers

At the end of 2020, a group of British MPs tabled an emergency motion to discuss the ban on scalping

It seems that our friends across the Channel are also starting to get fed up with the situation on HighTech products. Following a motion tabled at the end of last year by a group of British MPs on “banning the resale of products purchased via an automated robot”, the issue has mobilized about thirty MPs from all walks of life, giving credit to the move. PC Gamer teaches us that we could move squarely towards a law to punish scalpers. scalpers internet A bill has been introduced to this effect. The author was anxious to explain it: “Since industry experts now predict that the scalping problem will develop this year on other important goods and services, we are considering introducing a bill in Parliament. We would like to be able to further explore legislative options to protect consumers from this unfair practice (…) We have proposed that a similar legislative process be put in place to ensure that consumers can purchase game consoles and computer components at a price no higher than that recommended by manufacturers, and that the resale of goods purchased by robots be made illegal”

How to transform a pious wish into a law?

There is nothing to say, however, that the process will go all the way. However, the fact that this project was transformed from a mere mention (a topical discussion at the beginning of the session) to a bill proves that this subject is far from being ignored within British political bodies. The MP explains that he was alerted by his constituents at the end of the year : “The issue of scalping was first raised by voters who contacted me to explain their frustration at not being able to get hold of certain game consoles or computer components before Christmas. During the investigation, we discovered more details about the unscrupulous practice of “scalping” by automated robots to buy these goods in bulk and resell them at inflated prices. “ The only solution would therefore be to monitor compliance with the recommended retail price communicated by the brands. This would also mean sitting on the sacrosanct law of supply and demand, at least at the level of scalper resellers… A crowning achievement in the homeland of liberalism.
