Viewsonic VX2475Smhl-4K Review

Viewsonic VX2475Smhl-4K Review

You can barely go anywhere nowadays without seeing an advert for some sort of 4K capable device. From cameras, through phones, gaming, streaming and displays. When most people think of those 4K displays they probably imagine massive 50 plus inch TVs but the technology is also being squeezed into a much smaller form factor now too. Today we review one such display, a 23.6″ model,  in our Viewsonic VX2475Smhl-4K Review.

The VX2475Smhl-4K arrives in a fairly standard looking Viewsonic box with a basic image of the display and some product info. Inside, as well as the documentation and cd, we get mains plugs, power brick and HDMI cable.

Viewsonic VX2475Smhl-4K Review – The Screen

The VX2475Smhl-4k is shown above along with the stand. That part actually arrives in two pieces, the base and the mount and they screw together. The stand then slots into the back of the screen and clicks into place with the whole unit being kept steady on our desk by rubber feet on the base. In terms of specifications we have that 23.6″ viewable area surrounded by a gloss bezel and the panel used is “SuperClear” PLS with a 4ms response time. Dynamic contrast ratio is 120M:1 with contrast of 1000:1 and brightness is rated at 300 cd/m2.

Viewsonic use an anti-glare hard coating on the display (3H) and our light source is White light LED with 16.7M colours (8-bit) available. Backlight life is 30,000 hours (minimum).Viewing angles are also well rated, 178 degrees on horizontal and vertical. As far as dimensions go, it’s 22.3x1715x9.1inches with stand and we can tilt the display 5 degrees forward, 22 degrees backwards.

On the front edge of the screen we can see note of the controls used by Viewsonic and the buttons themselves are found on the base of the screen. Turning it over we can see the 100×100 VESA mount and that the rest of the back is fairly plain.

Over on the left of the screen when looking down at the back we find the power input and the  over at the right are the main inputs. Two HDMIs (inc 2.0), a DisplayPort 1.2 (60hz) and 3.5mm audio. All of the video ports support 3840×2160 resolution with one of the HDMI’s supporting MHL which means we can connect a smartphone or tablet which also supports MHL and use the VX2475Smhl-4k as our display for that device. Oh, and there are 2x3w speakers built in…

Viewsonic VX2475Smhl-4K Review – OSD

Viewsonic provide a fairly intuitive OSD on the VX2475Smhl-4k which allows us to configure the display to our needs. We can for example set recommended profiles, enable the blue light filter (to reduce eye fatigue) and configure sleep/auto power off.

Viewsonic VX2475Smhl-4K Review – Conclusion

As far as the build quality and design of the VX2475Smhl-4k go, Viewsonic have created a nice solid product. The stand is sturdy and there is a reasonable level of tilt available. The Controls are within easy reach and the gloss finish looks decent, though we prefer matt as it is less prone to fingerprints etc. It would be good if Viewsonic mounted the inputs so they could be accessed from the side as that is easier however as there are three, it is unlikely that we will have to change cables often.

For the display, well that is a real highlight…with one caveat. Lets get that out of the way first. Basically, fitting 3840×2160 into a 23.6″ display means that out of the box you will likely have tiny text and icons etc. That is easily fixed in the operating system however some OS’s handle text/item scaling much better than others. Additionally there will be the odd occasion where changing scaling causes issues with compatibility. Try to play Starcraft 2 on this screen with “large” set in Windows 8.1 for our desktop items and the mouse pointer doesn’t work until we apply a work-around. (NOTE: This is not an issue with this screen specifically, just something to be aware of on the whole). That aside, the VX2475Smhl-4k produces nice bright, sharp images with excellent viewing angles. We noted accurate colours too with the various picture modes offering a varied experience which will mean there is likely a setting to suit you.

The viewing experience was also flicker free and we had no issues with compatibility, whether we were using a desktop, laptop or phone to connect to the display. Rounding things off, Viewsonic offer a 3-year warranty on the VX2475Smhl-4k which is a nice bonus and wins the display our recommended award.
