We know what the problem with the RTX 3080s is…

Since its launch, we have received several alerts from some customers. Other sites have also reported problems with the RTX 3080 customs in particular.

If we believe the elements developed by Igor’s Lab, the crashes of some Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 customs could be easily solved by reducing the card’s frequencies between 50 and 100 MHz. If for the moment this has to be done by hand (for example with afterburner) it is likely that future drivers delivered by Nvidia will adjust the frequencies downwards. But the information on the origin of the problem seems clearer now: we are obviously dealing with a hardware problem.

The quality and/or quantity of the capacitors involved

It seems that the custom models which wanted to propose a wider frequency range, with higher overclocking range are not actually able to support these high frequencies. The main reason is not a defect of the Nvidia chip but rather the use of low quality (or low quantity) capacitors to filter the high frequencies in the voltage lines (NVVDD and MSVDD) of the GPU. This unfortunate choice generates stability problems mainly when the GPU exceeds the 2.00 GHz barrier. It should be noted that this only happens on some custom models and that these problems are not found on the Founders Edition.

Update on the situation: who does what?

At this point, the factual observation that can be made is that a number of manufacturers have used tantalum polymer capacitors, clearly with the aim of saving money. Cards with these capacitors are likely to have problems, even though there is no automaticity in history.

Finally, the number of capacitors is also a problem because some have decreased the quantity and the risks are still increasing.

On the contrary, Nvidia for its Founders card, and also Asus use multi-layer ceramic capacitors and are not impacted by these problems. For Igor’s Lab, Asus as well as Nvidia are at this moment the only ones not to have saved on the quality and the quantity of the capacitors.

A product launched without a real test cycle

We informed our readers very early on that our sources at the brands told us that despite the number of cards already launched, they didn’t have the functional driver to perform real tests. These drivers arrived only a few days before the launch. Too short to “test” a series of cards before putting them on the market.

Have the manufacturers who wanted to play with prices fully respected Nvidia’s list of specifications? A priori their errors on the choice of capacitors would probably not have gone through a real round of tests before launching…

It should be noted that at this point this is the only well-founded explanation available to explain the problems. No official communication has been made.
