What is the Radeon RX 6800M worth?

This new RDNA2 RX 6800M GPU is the most powerful product ever launched by AMD for notebooks. Laptop_AMD_RX-6800M To begin with, let’s take into account that the RX 6800M is actually based on the Navi 22 GPU, the same graphics processor used in the RX 6700 XT desktop computers. To go into a little more detail, the characteristics of the 6800M and 6700 XT are very similar: both have 40 computing units, 96 MB of cache and 12 GB of GDDR6 memory. As you can see, the difference is in the CPU and RAM frequencies. The 6800M chip has logically lower frequencies on the GPU, but this is identical on the Ram.

How does the 6800M compare to Nvidia?

In the speech, AMD claims that its 6800M is a product made for high-end gaming. The reds place the 6800M against the mobile versions of the RTX 3080 and 3070. Techspot was able to test AMD’s new baby installed at the heart of the latest Asus ROG Strix G15 AMD Advantage Edition laptop. The latter is equipped with a Ryzen 9 5900HX processor and thus the RX 6800M GPU. Laptop_AMD_RX-6800M benchmarks Laptop_AMD_RX-6800M Laptop_AMD_RX-6800M Overall, the results are excellent. AMD’s new GPU matches the RTX 3080 in 1080p, while it is a bit slower in 1440p. In all cases it outperforms the RTX 3070 by at least 10%. This is a situation that brings a little more competition in a field where Nvidia has been alone for too long.

More real competition than on the desktop

As for desktop cards, there is the ecosystem that Nvidia brings around its RTX. First of all, we can talk about raytracing, which is much more efficient and mature on the chameleon’s products. There is also the DLSS that AMD will probably be able to compete with in a few weeks with the FSR. But we should not forget Nvenc or other features that reinforce the power of the Nvidia offer. But AMD also has other arguments. SmartShift and Dynamic Boost 2.0 are two technologies that allow you to get the best out of a 100% AMD laptop (CPU + GPU). The power management and usage ranges seem superior to what Nvidia offers. By modulating the power of the processor from 20W to 70W depending on the requirements of the game, the results are always excellent, even in titles that hit the processor hard. Finally, on the price front AMD seems determined to be aggressive. Indeed, the Asus ROG Strix G15 AMD Advantage Edition that Techsport tested costs between $1550 and $1700 depending on the configuration. That’s at least a $500 savings over the most affordable RTX 3080 laptop on the US market. The Asus laptop even manages to be below the RTX 3070 products, even though they are less powerful. An argument that can clearly weigh heavily in the final decision.
