XFX XTS 520w Power Supply Review

XFX XTS 520w Power Supply Review

Today we are taking a look at a PSU from XFX. This model is from their new XTS range and offers platinum efficiency, fanless operation and modular cables.

Packaging and Bundle

XFX package their XTS520 in a box which has a design which is immediately recognisable as theirs. Inside we find the PSU wrapped in a bubble bag and then suspended in foam with a small manual present as well as a box containing then modular cables.

Each of the cables, other than the 24-pin which is braided, is flat with a flexible plastic coating. The connectors provided on the 520 and 460 watt versions are:

XFX go with a chunky looking chassis measuring 150x86x160mm on the XTS range and on each side we have perforated sections along with company branding.  The base of the PSU has a part sticker along with some further sections to promote airflow and then round at the back we find another perforated area, the 3-pin power connector, further branding and a power rocker switch. Then switching round to the other surface we find our modular connectors and yet another perforated section.

As noted earlier this is a fanless PSU, so the top surface has… well, no fan. Inside we have a LLC topology where as more traditional designs use a double forward topology which requires more components and therefore cooling (Via heatsinks and fan).  XFX use an “EasyRail” design which means we have a single 12v line which on this model is capable of 43 Amps. Our PCB has a dual sided layout, the capacitors are Japanese, 105°C rated and XFX use DC to DC technology as well as guaranteeing full wattage when operating at 50°C. Again reducing heat XFX also go with a SolidLink design which uses direct connections rather than wiring to minimise power loss.  For protection technology we get the following on the XTS range:

Over Current Protection (OCP), Over Voltage Protection (OVP), Under Voltage Protection (UVP), Short Circuit Protection (SCP), Over Power Protection (OPP) and Over Temperature Protection (OTP).

At HardwareHeaven we use a custom built test bench, you can find more information on that here.

Looking first at the design and build quality of the XTS range we have a unit which very much impresses. The branding across the chassis is discrete enough, the chassis finished well and the use of so much perforation allows an interesting look inside the PSU via a case window. Internally we get a modern design/layout and the components used, such as Japanese 105°C capacitors and to ensure our peace of mind XFX provide a 5-year warranty.

Pricing is competitive and when we look at the performance figures it is hard not to continue being impressed. The figures for 5v, 3.3v and 12v are stable, efficiency very good, even for a platinum unit and the AC ripple stats are top notch. Of course the key to this model is its thermal and noise performance. No problems on the later, this is a completely silent unit and even without a cooling fan the thermal figures are good. Yes this PSU runs hotter than the average fan cooled PSU when at medium to high loads but it is still noticeably cooler than the average high end GPU.

For anyone that needs a PSU which provides around 500w of power the XTS should be on the list. Silent operation, great efficiency and particularly ideal for building a gaming/HTPC system for the living room.
